The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has strongly condemned the disruption of a solemn occasion, describing it as a violation of cultural values and a grave act of disrespect toward the memory of a distinguished son of the state and the nation Prof JT Orkar
In a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Tim Nyor, the party denounced the incident as completely unacceptable and condemnable, emphasizing the need for decorum and respect in honoring the legacies of revered figures.
He said , it is deeply troubling that hoodlums, emboldened by the laxity, and tacit encouragement of the Alia government, chose to disrupt the funeral, harassing a federal lawmaker and instigating chaos.
"The Alia government has sadly become characterized by such disgraceful actions, which at this instance only served to tarnish the memory of a man who dedicated his life to the service of the state and country.
"We categorise these acts of violence, not only as an affront to the deceased's family and community, but also as a gross violation of the sanctity of solem occasions, which should be conducted in an atmosphere of peace and respect.
He stated that the fact that burials and thanksgiving services have become scences of chaos and hostility in Benue State under the present administration is a worrying trend that must be urgently addressed.
Additionally, ever in the history of Benue State since its creation in 1976 has a government exhibited more suppression, intolerance and narrow-mindedness as a style of governance. Not even in the dark days of military rule, has a government been this recklessly highhanded.
"We call on the Governor to take immediate steps to rein in his supporters, ensuring that such acts of lawlessness are brought to a halt. It is vital for the state leadership to exemplify decorum and prioritize safety and respect for the people during events.
God rest the soul of Prof JT Orkar.
