Retired Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has urged prompt resolution of veterans' protests over unpaid entitlements, warning that such demonstrations undermine military morale and discipline.
He made this appeal during a lecture titled “Celebrating the Armed Forces of Nigeria in National Development” held in Abuja as part of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day commemoration.
General Irabor emphasized that witnessing veterans' struggles could foster resentment among serving personnel. “These distressing incidents must end with the immediate settlement of outstanding benefits,” he urged.
Irabor, who led the military between 2021 and 2023, described the challenges faced by injured or disabled servicemen as "heartbreaking," adding that their condition can negatively impact those still in service and even push veterans into depression.
He advocated for enhanced care and rehabilitation for wounded and retired personnel through specialized support programs.
“The completion and proper management of ongoing projects, such as the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder facility and the Invictus Games initiative, are essential. These efforts will not only benefit personnel but also reflect a nation's gratitude for their sacrifices,” he said.
Irabor further called for comprehensive healthcare programs for veterans, highlighting that their most pressing need is access to quality healthcare services.
“Even when monetary entitlements are paid promptly, they often fall short due to inflation and healthcare expenses,” he explained. He noted that the current Defence Healthcare Insurance policy lacks adequate coverage for many medical conditions, exacerbating health challenges for retired personnel.
“A dedicated healthcare initiative tailored to the needs of veterans is vital,” he concluded.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, praised the sacrifices made by the armed forces.
“Our progress and security have been built upon the courage, sweat, and sacrifice of our military personnel,” Akpabio said. He also extended gratitude to the families of servicemen and women, acknowledging their resilience amid the uncertainties of military life.
“Nigerians owe a debt of gratitude to these unsung heroes that can never be fully repaid,” he noted.
