The United Kingdom's Minister of State for Defence, Lord Baron Vernon Rodney Coaker, paid an official visit to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. The visit aimed to strengthen the longstanding military relationship between the two nations.
According to a statement released by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Lord Coaker highlighted the significance of Nigeria as his first international destination since assuming office.
He acknowledged the cordial ties between the UK and Nigeria, emphasizing the shared commitment to democracy and security.
“The UK and Nigeria will stand together to defend democracy. Both nations deeply value democracy as a form of governance,” Lord Coaker stated.
He expressed the UK’s readiness to collaborate further in addressing Nigeria's security challenges, describing Nigeria as "not merely a friend but a strategic partner."
The Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Shayo Olatunde who represented the CDS welcomed the UK Minister and expressed gratitude for the UK's unwavering support.
He acknowledged the UK’s contributions, including the sponsorship of Nigeria's technical teams, Special Forces, and the training of over a hundred Nigerian Armed Forces personnel in civil-military relations.
He stated that the UK also provided counter-improvised explosive device (IED) mobile equipment to enhance Nigeria’s operational capabilities.
Air Vice Marsha Olatunde used the occasion to request further collaboration in areas such as advanced training, cyber warfare, and other critical military domains.
The visit underscores the robust partnership between the UK and Nigeria, with both nations committed to fostering peace, security, and democratic values.
