The Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has hailed the 2024 African Military Games as a remarkable demonstration of how sports can bridge divides and foster peace and cooperation across the continent.
Speaking during the closing ceremony in Abuja, where he served as the Chief Host, General Musa emphasized that the Games transcended mere competition.
“These Games highlight the collective strength of Africa,” General Musa stated. “In a world facing diverse security challenges, it is crucial for military forces to embrace innovative ways to promote cooperation and mutual understanding.”
He praised the National Sports Commission for its efforts and called for the revival of sports in Nigeria to enhance the country's competitiveness in Africa. Remarkably, no casualties were reported during the event, a testament to the professionalism and preparedness of the athletes.
“This outcome reflects the discipline and rigorous training ingrained in our military institutions across Africa,” he noted.
General Musa congratulated all participating teams, emphasizing that the Games were not just about winning medals but about fostering unity and resilience.
“While medals and trophies symbolize achievement, every team here is a winner.
“The courage, skill, and sportsmanship displayed have been truly inspiring. Victory is not just crossing the finish line first but embodying the values of unity and determination.
He commended the athletes for upholding the values of honor and resilience, regardless of their final standings, and expressed gratitude to the organizing committee, volunteers, and personnel who contributed to the event's success.
“As we conclude this memorable occasion, let us carry forward the lessons of unity and friendship these Games have imparted. Together, we can build a safer and more prosperous Africa,” he added.
Major General Abdullahi Maikano, President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), highlighted the Games as a powerful reminder of what unity can achieve. “These African Military Games have celebrated the strength of our military values and the shared commitment to a brighter future for Africa,” he remarked.
He noted that the event was more than a competition, serving as a celebration of shared values and a demonstration of the athletes’ discipline, determination, and cooperation.
The Chairman of the organizing committee, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, expressed gratitude to all participants and dignitaries, wishing international guests a safe return to their countries.
The Games, held under the theme “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” brought together participants from 20 nations. Nigeria emerged as the overall champion, amassing an impressive 234 medals, including 114 gold. Algeria followed with 96 medals, while Kenya secured third place with 50 medals.
The closing ceremony was graced by prominent dignitaries, including Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd.), Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and others.
The 2024 African Military Games have once again showcased the transformative power of sports in fostering unity, camaraderie, and excellence across the continent.
