President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday led the nation in honoring the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, at his burial held at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja.
During the solemn ceremony, President Tinubu described General Lagbaja as a "thoroughbred professional soldier" and announced the posthumous conferment of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on the late officer, in recognition of his dedication and service to the nation.
In a statement shared by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President commended General Lagbaja as a “trusted advisor” and a man of integrity who demonstrated unwavering commitment to his country and the well-being of his subordinates.
“Lieutenant General Lagbaja embodied the finest ideals of patriotism and professionalism,” the statement read. “He had deep faith in the capacity and readiness of our armed forces to protect our nation and safeguard its democratic institutions.”
The President lauded the late General for his hands-on leadership in security operations, which underscored his exceptional understanding of the military's role in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. He also acknowledged Lagbaja's commitment to the welfare of military personnel and their families, highlighting his efforts to clear a decade-long backlog of Group Life Assurance benefits for the families of deceased personnel.
Despite his brief tenure, having been appointed on June 19, 2023, General Lagbaja’s impact was described as transformative in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry. President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, expressing the nation's gratitude for the late General’s selfless service.
Addressing the Armed Forces, the President called on military personnel to honour General Lagbaja's legacy by upholding the principles of patriotism and dedication to national service. “His courage and sacrifice will continue to inspire the men and women who serve our country,” he stated.
The funeral, conducted with full military honours, included a 19-gun salute in memory of the late General. Vice President Kashim Shettima, senior government officials, military leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps joined the President in laying wreaths to pay their respects.
General Lagbaja, whose distinguished military career began in 1987, was remembered for his bravery, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s peace and stability.
