The Africa Military Games witnessed an exhilarating display of athleticism and strategic prowess as squash emerged as one of the most engaging sports of the tournament, held in Abuja, Nigeria.


The event brought together elite military athletes from across the continent, demonstrating not just physical strength but also the mental agility required for the high-paced sport of squash.


While traditionally overshadowed by mainstream sports like football and athletics, squash has been steadily gaining traction across Africa. This year’s Military Games further cemented its appeal, drawing large crowds and showcasing a blend of skill, discipline, and camaraderie unique to the sport.


Players from nations such as, South Africa, and Nigeria dominated the courts, reflecting the diversity and depth of talent in the region. 


Nigeria considered a global powerhouse in squash, set a high bar with their commanding performances, led by Adeyi Odumage, Udoh Victoria, Nwafor Faith and Sarka Alabibat who delivered thrilling matches that kept audiences on edge.

Squash at the Africa Military Games served as a platform for fostering unity and mutual respect among participating nations. The fast-paced rallies and intense matches were a testament to the values of discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship that the military and sport both hold dear.


Squash tournaments also offered a chance for cultural exchange. Off the court, players and officials engaged in meaningful interactions, sharing experiences and strategies while strengthening bonds between countries.


Squash coach for team Nigeria Bernard Mkpe Richard said, Nigeria is looking forward to maintaining it best as time goes on and are hopeful that this momentum will translate into more support for the sport at both grassroots and elite levels across the continent.

As the 2024 Africa Military Games drew to a close, the squash courts stood as a symbol of the dynamic intersection between sports and military excellence a powerful reminder that even in competition, the true victory lies in unity and shared purpose.
