Four countries Algeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Nigeria are competing in the football event of the ongoing Africa Military Games in Abuja.
The official draw, held today at the media center of the Stadium, paired the Nigerian Armed Forces against their Cameroonian counterparts in what promises to be a thrilling opening match scheduled for 4 PM at the stadium’s main bowl.
The second game of the day, set for 6 PM, will feature the Armed Forces of Algeria facing off against Equatorial Guinea.
Nigerian referee Abdullahi Abubakar will oversee the Algeria-Equatorial Guinea game, while Algerian international referee Benyahia Houssam has been appointed to officiate the much-anticipated Nigeria vs. Cameroon clash.
Speaking ahead of the matches, General Brahima Diabate, Head of the Football Commission for Military Sports in Africa, emphasized the importance of upholding sportsmanship. He urged players to respect the rules of the game and foster camaraderie throughout the competition.
“Football is about winning or losing, but above all, it is about mutual respect and sportsmanship. Players should treat one another with humanity and strengthen friendships during the games.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Football Event for the Africa Military Games Abuja 2024, General Fawole, reiterated the significance of discipline and national representation.
"These games are an opportunity to showcase the best of our military and Africa as a whole. Every participant should adhere to the values highlighted during the opening ceremony and conduct themselves with honor.
As the football season within the Africa Military Games begins, participants have been reminded of their roles as ambassadors of their respective countries.
General Fawole added, “Africa is watching. This is a chance to inspire others through excellence, unity, and professionalism.”
With the opening matches kicking off this evening, all eyes are on the teams to deliver an exciting and respectful display of military football.
