The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency NIHSA has observed a minimal decrease in the water level of River Benue over the past few days, offering some relief to communities along the riverbank.
According to NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, the likelihood of severe flooding is gradually diminishing due to the Agency’s diligent monitoring of the situation in close collaboration with the management of Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
Mohammed explained that NIHSA has been working round-the-clock, measuring water levels at key stations along the River Benue basin during morning, afternoon, and evening intervals.
"We are managing the flow from Lagdo Dam and the water conveyed through the basin to mitigate flood risks.
Despite this positive trend, NIHSA remains cautious, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of climate patterns.
Mohammed urged Nigerians to continue adhering to flood resilience protocols and to remain vigilant as the Agency monitors the situation.
"Flood mitigation is our priority.
"We encourage the public to stay safe and follow necessary precautions.
NIHSA’s proactive efforts highlight the importance of constant preparedness in the face of potential natural disasters, reassuring citizens while underscoring the ongoing need for vigilance.
