The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, joined former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon Rtd, at a thanksgiving service celebrating Gowon's 90th birthday. The event took place at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Maitama, Abuja, under the Diocese of Abuja, Anglican Communion.
The service was marked by an atmosphere of worship and praise as attendees reflected on the life and contributions of the former leader. General Gowon, a key figure in Nigeria's history and unity, read from Philippians 2:1-12, sharing a message of gratitude and faith.
General Gowon expressed heartfelt thanks to the church and those who gathered to honor him. He extended special appreciation to Governor Mutfwang, who attended the event shortly after an official trip to Sweden with the Vice President.
Gowon reflected on his deep connections to Plateau and Kaduna States, while reaffirming his primary allegiance to Nigeria. He called for Nigerians to actively seek peace and harmony, emphasizing the critical importance of unity.
The sermon, delivered by the Resident Bishop, Ven. Amb. Dr. Tiwatope A. Elias-Fatile, centered on the theme “Have the Mind of Christ.” Drawing from Philippians 2:1-12, he encouraged believers to embody Christ-like qualities of humility, obedience, love, and forgiveness, reminding them that a life without Christ lacks true meaning.
Governor Mutfwang praised General Gowon for his unwavering commitment to the peace and unity of Nigeria, noting that the people of Plateau State were proud to join in celebrating this milestone.
The service concluded with special prayers for General Gowon, asking for divine guidance and continued strength to inspire future generations and offer wise counsel for national unity. A birthday cake was presented by the church to honor the statesman’s humility and lifelong service to God and humanity.
