The Federal Government has officially exonerated the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, from allegations suggesting his involvement in banditry in Zamfara State. A thorough investigation by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) found the claims to be without merit and politically motivated.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, the NSA’s investigation revealed no credible evidence to support the accusations against Matawalle.
Speaking on national television, Onanuga explained that the allegations were merely fabrications aimed at undermining the Minister’s reputation and casting doubt on his position in the defense sector.
“These allegations are simply unfounded.
"Matawalle’s continued presence in the cabinet reflects his dedication to national security.
The campaign to discredit Matawalle, some believe, was an attempt to prevent him from retaining his post as Minister of State for Defence. Despite this, he was retained following a recent cabinet reshuffle, a decision attributed to his commitment to service and significant contributions to improving security across Nigeria, particularly in the North-West.
In the statement, since his appointment, the security landscape in the region has seen marked improvements, exemplified by his recent visit to Sokoto and his leadership in combating banditry in Zamfara.
Matawalle’s recent operational oversight at the base of Operation Hadarin Daji led to the successful neutralization of Halilu Sububu, a notorious bandit leader, along with his key associates. His strategic efforts have underscored his commitment to eradicating insecurity in the region, strengthening public confidence in his leadership.
Given the findings of the investigation, Onanuga urged those who had spread these allegations to retract their statements and apologize.
He emphasized the importance of public cooperation in national security efforts, rather than spreading misinformation. “Those behind these baseless accusations must acknowledge their actions and support efforts to enhance national security,” he concluded.
