Nigeria's Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, addressed the 79th United Nations General Assembly, reaffirming Nigeria's commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.
Badaru commended the United Nations for its leadership in global peace efforts, reiterating Nigeria's support for both the Non-Aligned Movement and the African Group.
He emphasized the urgency of advancing nuclear disarmament, underscoring the grave threat posed by nuclear weapons to global peace and humanity.
The minister highlighted the unjustifiable existence of nuclear weapons in a world facing critical socio-economic challenges. He called on Nuclear-Weapon States to honor their obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty NPT and take decisive action towards creating a world free of nuclear weapons.
The Minister also drew attention to the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon use, noting the severe impacts on health, the environment, and economies. He reaffirmed Nigeria's support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons TPNW and applauded the nations that have ratified it, encouraging others to follow suit.
Additionally, He underscored Nigeria's commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, commending the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA for its role in monitoring and ensuring the peaceful application of nuclear technology.
The Minister reiterated Nigeria's dedication to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, stating, "The journey to disarmament may be difficult, but we must remain steadfast. Nigeria is committed to contributing to a safer and more secure world for future generations."
