In a significant step to enhance economic cooperation and foster development, President Xi Jinping of China and President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria met in Beijing on Tuesday, signaling a new phase in their countries' diplomatic relations. The meeting took place ahead of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, underscoring both nations' commitment to closer collaboration.
President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of strengthening ties through collective efforts and mutual benefit, stating, "We have found a path of seeking collective strength, unity, and win-win cooperation. I propose elevating our bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership." President Tinubu echoed this sentiment, highlighting that such a partnership should contribute to regional development, peace, stability, and security in West Africa.
The two leaders acknowledged over 50 years of diplomatic relations, grounded in mutual respect and cooperation. Tinubu pointed to Nigeria's vast potential, noting that as Africa's most populous country, its youthful population is a key driver of economic growth. President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria's economic reforms, expressing his willingness to work with Tinubu to "fully unleash the exemplary role of China-Nigeria cooperation"
Reflecting on his connection with China, Tinubu noted that this visit marked his second official trip to the country, the first being during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State. He stressed the significance of the visit for both Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which he chairs. "This is a crucial visit for Nigeria and the rest of Africa," Tinubu stated. "China-Nigeria relations, spanning over half a century, will continue to strengthen to advance trade and economic development".
Tinubu emphasized that the strategic partnership aims to bolster regional development, peace, and stability in West Africa. He also reiterated Nigeria's commitment to economic reforms, noting that their successful implementation would drive sustainable growth.
The meeting concluded with the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on initiatives including the Belt and Road Initiative, news exchange cooperation, and television cooperation. "We recognize the need to reform our economic program and have taken strategic steps to achieve these goals," Tinubu remarked, expressing optimism that the new partnership would support both countries in achieving sustainable growth.
President Tinubu was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara State, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Foreign Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, among others.
