The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, visited Edo State to evaluate the preparedness of the Armed Forces and security agencies ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for Saturday.
During the meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki, General Musa emphasized that his visit was aimed at assessing the operational readiness of the security forces.
He assured the Governor that the Armed Forces and other security personnel would ensure a conducive environment for voters to freely choose their candidates.
"I assure the good people of Edo State that the Armed Forces and security agencies will conduct themselves professionally throughout the election process.
The CDS issued a stern warning to anyone with intentions to disrupt the election, advising them to reconsider or face legal consequences.
"The military would not tolerate any form of violence or the carrying of weapons.
Furthermore, General Musa revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked the military with ensuring the most peaceful election in the state’s history.
General Musa urged the people of Edo to turn out in large numbers and vote, assuring them that their safety was guaranteed.
He explained that the Nigerian Police would provide general security, while the military would serve as a backup to maintain order.
Addressing military personnel, the CDS called for professionalism throughout the election period. He reminded them of the existence of a standby court-martial for any personnel found violating their duties.
Governor Obaseki expressed gratitude to the CDS for his visit, describing it as a reassuring step toward a peaceful election. He commended the support of the military, particularly the General Officer Commanding the 2 Division, for their efforts in maintaining security.
The Governor emphasized the strategic importance of the Edo election to national security and pledged continued support to the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
Speaking to key stakeholders, General Musa highlighted the global attention on the election, urging all parties to ensure a safe and fair voting process. He also noted that additional security measures had been implemented to monitor the conduct of security personnel during the election.
