The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, paid an official visit to Zamfara State on 13 September 2024, as part of his efforts to address security challenges in the region.
During the meeting at the Government House in Gusau, General Musa expressed gratitude to the state governor for his continuous support of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and other security agencies operating in the state.
He also commended the governor for the significant development Zamfara has witnessed in the past year.
General Musa observed that despite the ongoing security concerns, the people of Zamfara appeared optimistic. He stated that his visit was a gesture of solidarity with the residents and reiterated his commitment to restoring peace to the state, highlighting that it was a direct mandate from the President.
General Musa said regarding the protection of farmers he assured that the AFN would provide the necessary security to ensure uninterrupted farming activities, thereby contributing to a prosperous harvest season amid current economic challenges. He also emphasized the dedication and competence of the security leadership in Zamfara, vowing to bring notorious bandits to justice soon.
The Defence Chief called on the people of Zamfara to refrain from collaborating with bandits by acting as informants. Instead, he encouraged them to supply vital intelligence to security forces to aid in the fight against insurgency.
General Musa also announced the reorganization of military operations in the state, which would now operate under a Theater Command structure, with General Officers Commanding serving as component commanders.
The CDS said, The restructuring aims to improve coordination among various state and security actors. The operation has been renamed "Operation FANSAN YAMMA."
Additionally, he revealed that the President had approved the deployment of more military assets to enhance security efforts.
General Musa highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating that "We need capable men and women to support the process of achieving peace, as we cannot be everywhere at once."
Addressing troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI, who had successfully ambushed and eliminated a number of terrorists, General Musa urged them to maintain a positive mindset, reminding them that "Wars are fought by humans, not machines.
"He pledged to provide the necessary resources to sustain the fight and committed to improving their welfare, rewarding their bravery on the spot.
In his response, Zamfara State Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal thanked General Musa for taking the time to travel by road from Abuja to Zamfara, describing it as a significant show of commitment.
The governor acknowledged that the presence of the CDS had already boosted the morale of the people, instilling hope that peace was on the horizon.
He affirmed the state government's full cooperation with the military and other security agencies, adding that General Musa's proven track record of achievements made him confident that the new security measures would lead to lasting peace in Zamfara.
