Nigeria's top security officials on August 6, 2024,
convened at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja to address the recent surge in protests, riots, and subversive activities threatening the nation's stability.
Chaired by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, the meeting included the Chiefs of Army, Naval, and Air Staff; the Inspector General of Police; the Comptroller Generals of Immigration and Customs; the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS); other key security agency heads; and members of the media.
In a unified stance, the security leaders conveyed a strong message to subversive elements and reassured citizens of their dedication to maintaining peace and order.
General Musa underscored the cohesive efforts of the security forces and their unwavering commitment to protecting Nigerians. He stated,
"We are working as a team to ensure the safety and security of our dear country
"We will not relent in pursuing those who promote opposition to the government or subversion
"We must protect Nigerians, the only people we are after are enemies of the state. Anyone who makes themselves an enemy of the state will face the law."
General Musa also highlighted the importance of professionalism, respect for human rights, and adherence to rules of engagement during operations.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, reaffirmed the Army's dedication to defending democracy, peace, and harmony. He declared,
"We will not sit by and watch the nation slide into anarchy." He also mentioned that the Army is collaborating with other security agencies to maintain law and order.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun warned against acts of treason, such as displaying foreign flags and calling for a military takeover, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated and offenders would be dealt with accordingly.
The Police Boss addressed allegations of excessive force used during the protests, clarifying that the police and military had not used excessive force, and only deployed teargas and smoke to disperse crowds when necessary.
Representing the DSS, Yusuf Bichi highlighted the agency’s intelligence-gathering efforts and urged Nigerians to embrace peace, emphasizing the need for responsible citizenship and respect for the law.
Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service Kemi Nanna Nandap, revealed that individuals in the diaspora identified as sponsors of the unrest have been watchlisted and will be reported to the necessary authorities if they attempt to enter the country.
The security chiefs collectively called on Nigerians to unite against chaos, stressing the need for collective responsibility and action to maintain national stability. They urged citizens to engage in dialogue and work together to address the country’s challenges, emphasizing that solutions require a collaborative effort.
