During the ongoing Operation Lake Sanity 2, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) reported a major surrender of 263 Boko Haram terrorists and their families in Sector 1, Cameroon, between July 10 and July 17, 2024.
This announcement was made by Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, Chief Military Public Information Officer at the MNJTF Headquarters in N'Djamena, Chad, on July 19, 2024.
The series of surrenders began on July 11, 2024, when five terrorists turned themselves in to MNJTF troops in Wulgo, along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. Initial reports indicated that these individuals came from Tumbuma and Kutumgulla in Marte Local Government Area (LGA), Nigeria. On the same day, Malum Kori Bukar, aged 50, escaped from the Jibilaram hideout and surrendered.
Further surrenders occurred on July 11, with 19 terrorists giving up in Madaya, extreme North Cameroon, and another 11 in Wulgo from the Tumbuma hideout in two separate waves.
On July 12, 2024, 64 individuals surrendered in Bonderi, Cameroon, including six adult males, 20 women, and 38 children. The following day, 27 terrorists surrendered.
The trend persisted on July 15, 2024, with 102 individuals surrendering in Bonderi, extreme North Cameroon, including 20 adult men, 40 women, and 42 children. Additionally, five individuals surrendered in Wulgo, with two coming from the Tumbuma hideout, southern Lake Chad.
On July 16, 2024, two more terrorists surrendered. The next day, July 17, 2024, saw the surrender of 48 terrorists and their families, comprising 10 adult males, 15 females, and 23 children.
Preliminary investigations revealed that all surrendered individuals were from Nigerian communities. They have since been handed over to the troops of Operation HADIN KAI for further processing.
