The Joint Task Force OP HADIN KAI in the Northeast recorded a series of terror attacks over the weekend in Gworza Local Government Area, Borno State. The coordinated assaults, involving multiple Person-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (PBIEDs), occurred on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
The first incident happened around 1500 hours when a female suicide bomber, disguised as a beggar, detonated an explosive device at a wedding reception on Mararaba Hausari Street. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that while efforts were underway to stabilize and move casualties to the hospital, a second explosion occurred at 1700 hours from another female bomber nearby.
To prevent further casualties, troops immediately imposed a curfew. However, during its enforcement, a third explosion targeted the soldiers, killing one and two members of the hybrid forces. A fourth attack was averted when the suspect detonated the bomb prematurely, becoming the only casualty.
Overall, these attacks resulted in 20 deaths and 52 injuries. The armed forces mourn the loss of every life, viewing it as a profound tragedy. On behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. CG Musa, and the entire armed forces, we express our condolences and support to all affected.
These attacks are seen as desperate responses to recent military successes, which have significantly weakened terrorist leadership, resources, and support. The terrorists' cowardly acts aim to project strength amidst their decline, creating panic and seeking to diminish support for the armed forces and the government.
