The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR, has sponsored a training program for 22 officers and personnel from Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to enhance their skills and confidence in archery, as well as their marksmanship for shooting.
Captain Lurwanu Abdulkadir of the Nigerian Navy issued a statement on behalf of the Acting Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, noting that the training began on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Ach Club Range Unique Gardens, Accra Street, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, and is scheduled to conclude on Friday, July 26, 2024.
Major General SY Bashir, Chief of Defence Communications and a participant in the training, highlighted the similarities between archery safety rules and those of shooting. He explained that archery skills, such as aiming, taking a shot, and following through, can be applied to shooting a gun. General Bashir emphasized that these activities can significantly improve the marksmanship of the officers and urged all personnel to take the training seriously.
The training sessions included various activities:
1.Introduction to General Archery: This session covered a brief history of archery, an overview of archery equipment, equipment setup, and range safety.
2. Types of Aiming in Archery: This session included a technical demonstration of traditional archery, focusing on anchor points, foot positioning, and achieving consistency.
3. Shooting Session: Participants were split into two teams, Alpha and Bravo, for practical shooting exercises.
Day one of the training was deemed a success, with all participants performing excellently during the 5-meter range shooting practice.
Among the attendees was Rear Admiral SD El-Ladan, the Director of Maritime at the Defence Research and Development Bureau, Abuja.
