The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a cautionary statement regarding the potential for violent elements to hijack upcoming protests.
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. General Buba indicated that the planned protests bear a troubling resemblance to violent and unresolved incidents in Kenya, warning that unscrupulous actors may attempt to exploit the situation to incite anarchy.
"The military is committed to preventing any descent into chaos," General Buba affirmed. "While the constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest, it does not condone mobilizing for anarchy and terror."
General Buba highlighted potential targets for violence, including individuals with basic possessions, places of worship, businesses, and markets. He called on citizens to understand the unique risks associated with this protest and to remain calm, allowing the government to address the issues and work towards national prosperity.
In response to economic hardships and perceived misgovernance, some Nigerians are planning a nationwide protest beginning on August 1.
General Buba also provided an update on ongoing military operations, noting significant progress in targeting terrorist groups and their affiliates. The military remains focused on dismantling these threats and maintaining national security.
In addition, General Buba mentioned ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft across various regions. Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's directive to increase oil production in the Niger Delta, the military has intensified actions against those involved in crude oil theft.
The military is dedicated to maintaining peace and stability and will take decisive action against any threats to national security, General Buba concluded.
