The ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations across the country have seen commendable progress, with efforts set to continue until the complete eradication of terrorist threats.
General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted these advancements during a press briefing on May 30, 2024. He attributed the success to the concerted efforts in eliminating terrorist leaders, commanders, and combatants, as well as neutralizing their key assets including logistics, administrative, and combat capabilities.
General Buba emphasized the strong institutional support received by the troops, coupled with growing popular support for their operations.
In May alone, General Buba reported significant setbacks to terrorist activities, with 624 terrorists neutralized and 1,051 individuals, including logistic suppliers and informants, arrested. Additionally, 563 hostages were rescued. Troops recovered 707 assorted weapons and 16,487 rounds of assorted ammunition, preventing oil theft amounting to over #700 million (N705,836,036.00).
The detailed breakdown for May includes 411 AK47 rifles, 234 locally fabricated guns, 43 pump-action guns, 231 dane guns, 10,782 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 4,310 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 1,623 rounds of 7.62x54mm ammo, 1,023 rounds of 9mm, and 2,100 live cartridges. Additionally, 4,871,470 liters of stolen crude oil, 931,416 liters of illegally refined AGO, and 4,480 liters of PMS were recovered.
General Buba also addressed the recent tragic events involving the killing of 17 personnel in Okuama, Delta State, and the assault on unarmed personnel at Banex Plaza in Abuja. He stressed that such incidents are detrimental to national security and must not be tolerated.
General Buba emphasized that military personnel, who risk their lives to protect the nation, deserve respect and support, not violence. He asserted that any misconduct by troops should be reported and dealt with through the military justice system.
General Buba called for citizens to recognize their responsibility in supporting the troops through their actions and words, to maintain morale and fighting spirit. Acts of disrespect and violence against military personnel are unpatriotic and undermine the national interest. General Buba reiterated the commitment to continue the fight until all terrorists are defeated, ensuring the nation can thrive once more.
