In a pivotal meeting held on June 5, 2024, at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) headquarters in Abuja, Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi announced a collaborative effort with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to bolster security and enhance revenue generation.
During the meeting, CGC Adeniyi congratulated Shehu Mohammed on his recent appointment as the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, expressing enthusiasm for the partnership between the two agencies.
He highlighted the importance of cooperation among government bodies to ensure the safety and economic well-being of the public.
Commitment to Collaboration
CGC Adeniyi emphasized the shared vision between NCS and FRSC, stating, "Our missions align closely. This collaboration is essential, and your visit signifies a mutual commitment to strengthening our joint efforts toward common goals." He noted that the existing memorandum of understanding between NCS and FRSC has been effective, but there is potential for further improvement to deepen their collaboration.
The Customs Boss assured the public that the partnership would address issues such as vehicle theft and improper vehicle imports. "Together, we aim to eliminate the problem of stolen vehicles. Additionally, the government has provided a window for regular improperly imported cars, allowing owners to pay the correct duties before stricter enforcement begins."
Tackling Substandard Imports
CGC Adeniyi also highlighted the ongoing efforts to curb the importation of substandard tyres, which pose significant safety hazards. He reaffirmed the commitment of NCS to continue confiscating such items to protect public safety.
FRSC's Role in Enhancing Vehicle Security
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer of the FRSC, praised CGC Adeniyi for his initiatives that have improved staff welfare and created a conducive working environment. He specifically commended the integration of vehicle information from the National Vehicle Identification System (NVIS) and NCS's database. This consolidation enhances national security, improves revenue generation, and facilitates easier business operations while curbing smuggling activities.
Strengthening the Partnership
Mohammed emphasized the importance of enforcing restrictions on the importation of vehicles beyond their expiry age limits, noting that many road accidents involve outdated and dilapidated vehicles. He assured CGC Adeniyi of FRSC's support in achieving these enforcement goals.
"The relationship between NCS and FRSC will continue to grow stronger. We are committed to supporting the CGC's objectives, as collaboration yields significant victories in trade modernization and security," Mohammed stated.
