The Nigerian military high command is mourning the 'unwarranted' killing of at least five soldiers by IPOB/ESN terrorists at a checkpoint in Aba.

In response to this attack, the military has vowed to take strong action, stating that they will no longer treat any assaults on their personnel lightly.

Major General Edward Buba, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Defence Media Operations (DMO), confirmed the death toll. He explained that the soldiers, part of OP UDO KA, were stationed at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA), adjacent to Aba metropolis in Abia State, when they were ambushed and killed by the terrorists.

General Buba detailed the incident, saying, "The troops, deployed to maintain peace and protect the citizens, were suddenly attacked by the terrorists. The assailants, in three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and others from surrounding built-up areas, launched a surprise assault on the checkpoint."

He lamented the loss, noting, "Tragically, the attack resulted in the deaths of five armed forces personnel. The military deeply mourns these losses, as every soldier lost in battle is a significant blow. Investigations into the attack are ongoing."

General Buba emphasized the importance of public support in the fight against insurgency, stating, "Winning this war is nearly impossible without the support of the populace. The IPOB has exploited this to carry out attacks on our troops."

He concluded with a firm stance on retaliation: "It is crucial for the military to respond decisively to this heinous act. We will apply overwhelming military pressure to ensure the complete defeat of this group. The military will be fierce in its response."

General Buba reiterated that Nigeria is at war and called on all citizens to stand united in supporting the military’s efforts to secure victory.
