The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced, with great sadness, the passing of Deputy Comptroller Etop Andrew Essien. Essien, who served as the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Revenue in the Account Unit, tragically passed away on June 25, 2024, while delivering a presentation before the National Assembly House Committee on Public Accounts.
During his presentation, Deputy Comptroller Essien exhibited signs of discomfort approximately three minutes in and requested water. Despite prompt assistance, he was unable to recover and passed away.
Born on November 16, 1967, Essien joined the Nigeria Customs Service on November 27, 1989. He brought over three decades of dedicated service to the nation, hailing from Nsit-Ubium in Akwa Ibom State. Known for his diligence and exceptional performance in the Accounts Unit, Essien played a crucial role in the accurate reconciliation of revenue.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire Nigeria Customs Service. "The loss of such a dedicated and valued team member is deeply felt across the Service. We are committed to supporting and assisting his family and colleagues during this difficult period," Adeniyi stated.
"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. His exemplary service and unwavering commitment to duty will be remembered and cherished by the entire NCS community. The Nigeria Customs Service will forever remember Deputy Comptroller Essien for his outstanding contributions and dedication to the nation. We honour his memory, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all."
Deputy Comptroller Essien is survived by his wife and children. His loss is a profound one for the Service and all who knew him. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
