The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, engaged in a spirited game of volleyball with wounded soldiers, many of whom bore the scars of battle, at the sports complex of the Armed Forces Officers Mess in Asokoro.
Among the spectators, emotions ran high, especially as they witnessed former warriors who had once bravely fought on the front lines in the North East, now confronting the challenges of life as amputees.
In a tightly contested match, the team led by General Musa emerged victorious over the prince's team, drawing both cheers and tears from the crowd.
Reflecting on the profound impact of the visit, Tolulope Ayinde, a spectator, expressed newfound awareness of the struggles endured by soldiers. She remarked that such events shed light on the often overlooked sacrifices made by those in uniform.
"I am here to support Harry and Meghan on their visit to Nigeria. Harry's creation of the Invictus Games for wounded soldiers, coupled with their recent 10-year anniversary celebration, underscores the importance of shining a spotlight on the plight of wounded soldiers in Nigeria, a cause which often goes unnoticed by many of us Nigerians," she said.
Sanusi Danjuma, a wounded soldier, shared how his disability had ignited a passion for sports within him. Despite his initial reluctance towards sports, he found joy and fulfillment in participating in the game.
General Musa, speaking after the match, emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being and morale of all members of the armed forces.
General Musa emphasized that the support of all Nigerians was crucial in facing the challenges ahead, highlighting the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families for the nation's unity and security.
Following the game, the Duke and Duchess were warmly received at a colorful reception held inside the Officers' Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, as a gesture of gratitude for their visit and support.
