The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged media employers to enhance the salaries, insurance coverage, and pension benefits for journalists nationwide.
During a courtesy visit to Chris Isiguzo, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) In Abuja, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for improved welfare for journalists. Ajaero pointed out a decline in journalistic standards, though he acknowledged the positive impact of technology on the profession.
Ajaero highlighted the crucial role journalists played in Nigeria’s fight for independence and the current democratic era. He expressed concern over the poor welfare of journalists, noting the unfortunate reality that many are struggling to receive their salaries.
"The welfare of journalists is being neglected. While they advocate for everyone, no one advocates for them—not even their peers,
"Journalists sacrifice weekends, public holidays, and festive seasons, covering events where others are celebrating."
Ajaero, criticized the lack of support among journalists, stating, "Even if a journalist is dismissed or unpaid for a year, fellow journalists rarely report on such injustices."
Ajaero proposed the establishment of a biennial consultative forum for negotiating a minimum wage for journalists with media employers. He also advocated for a comprehensive pension plan and insurance coverage to ensure better working conditions for journalists.
Additionally, he called on law enforcement agencies to treat the non-payment of journalists’ salaries as a criminal offense.
