Nigeria Customs Service Launches Health Insurance Awareness Program for Officers

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign in collaboration with Songhai Health Trust to educate officers about the benefits of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), On May 20, 2024. The program, launched at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja, was attended by senior officials and stakeholders.

Representing the Comptroller-General of Customs, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in Charge of Human Resource Development, Greg Itotoh, highlighted the significance of the NHIS in providing high-quality healthcare to officers. He emphasized that the sensitisation initiative aims to maximize the benefits available through Songhai Health Trust.


“This program ensures that our officers receive quality, affordable, and stress-free healthcare services. Participation is crucial as the NCS makes mandatory contributions to this insurance scheme,” Itotoh explained. 


He urged all officers to take full advantage of the incentives provided by the government, noting that the NCS's contributions to the scheme are wasted if not utilized.


Additionally, Itotoh announced that medical units from the NCS would visit various zones, commands, and formations to further educate officers about the scheme’s benefits.


Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Comptroller of Customs (Pharmacy) and NHIA Desk Officer, reinforced the program's purpose, stating that it is a government initiative designed to pool resources for effective healthcare delivery to citizens. 


Dr. Rotimi Anlemi, Deputy Manager of Operations at Songhai Health Trust, stated out details on how the scheme functions and the specific benefits available to participating officers. 


This sensitisation program underscores the NCS's commitment to ensuring its officers are well-informed about their healthcare options and the advantages of the NHIS.
