Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a prominent Nigerian economist and banker, was appointed as the Emir of Kano on June 8, 2014, following the death of his predecessor, Ado Bayero. His selection marked the beginning of a significant tenure characterized by both reform and controversy.
Before becoming Emir, Sanusi was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from 2009 to 2014. His tenure at the CBN was notable for his strong stance against corruption and his efforts to stabilize the Nigerian banking sector during a tumultuous period.
As Emir, Sanusi continued to be a vocal advocate for social and economic reforms. He emphasized the importance of education, particularly for girls, and criticized practices and policies he viewed as detrimental to the development of Kano and Nigeria at large. His outspoken nature and reformist agenda often put him at odds with political authorities.
Sanusi's tenure as Emir abruptly ended on March 9, 2020, when he was dethroned by the Kano State Government, citing allegations of insubordination and disrespect to lawful instructions from authorities. His removal was widely seen as politically motivated, linked to his criticisms of the government's policies and practices.
Today the people of Kano celebrate his reinstatement as the Emir of Kano.
