The Comptroller-General of Customs, Wale Adeniyi, has launched a workshop for a newly established tactical team, Operation Whirlwind, aimed at combating the smuggling of petroleum products to neighboring countries.
Speaking in Abuja, Adeniyi emphasized the importance of the team in safeguarding the nation’s economy from the detrimental effects of petroleum product smuggling.
"Economic saboteurs must face justice," Adeniyi asserted. "We have elevated our service to an enviable status; our revenue and targets have both increased. However, if our impact on the Nigerian economy is insufficient, we must strive to do better."
The workshop, he explained, is intended to provide the team with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively prevent smuggling, particularly of petroleum products diverted to neighboring countries.
"This is not a task force or the establishment of checkpoints," he clarified. "This is an intelligence-driven operation that will support the highest level of political will. Our dedication and loyalty must remain uncompromised. Serious consequences will follow for anyone who undermines this mission. There is zero tolerance for sabotage."
Adeniyi stressed the importance of collaboration and unity among the officers, stating, "You were chosen because you are capable. Your coordinator has an impeccable record, and your success hinges on teamwork. You are here to support the existing structure, not to compete with it, but to combat those undermining our efforts."
Additionally, the Director of Legal Services was scheduled to instruct the team on proper procedures for filing seizures, ensuring all legal aspects of their operations are correctly managed.
